The very first step in building a handmade book is designing the paper. Then I will carve the design into a linoleum block with linoleum cutting tools.
Next, I ink up the block with a brayer.
The paper is put on top of the inked block, burnished with a baren (you can see part of my baren behind my hand) and pulled off to dry.
While the ink is drying I assemble the book's insides - the book block. Here I am tearing the paper to size against a metal ruler.
Then, the pages are folded in half and assembled into signatures. Usually there are 3 or 4 sheets in each signature.
All the signatures are assembled.
The holes are poked in the sigantures using a cradle and small paper awl. The cradle makes it easier by holding the pages open while I make the holes in the fold.
